초록/해제
요약 : One of the most fundamental, distinctive characteristics of Korean Protestant Christianity is its emphasis on three related themes: a special conception of the divine-human relation; community-based consciousness; and an emphasis on sanctification. The dissertation shows how this distinctive Korean emphasis results from Protestantism's encounter with, and transformation through, three idiosyncratic characteristics of Korean religiosity---Heaven consciousness, u-ri ("we-ness") consciousness, and the way of unity with the Divine. These three characteristics can be traced through the Choso˘n Chujahak (Neo-Confucian) tradition to the ancient Tan'gun myth. The thesis argues that the internal relationship between the accumulated living religious traditions throughout Korean history, and Korean Protestant Christianity, should be one of the most important topics of an indigenously Korean Protestant theology, though it has been persistently ignored by theologians and scholars.

요약 : The thesis offers a point-by-point explanation of the three themes of Heaven consciousness, u-ri consciousness, and the way of the Divine-human encounter in the accumulated living religious traditions of Korea. After a brief introduction (chapter one), the thesis explores these themes through a comparative analysis of the Tan'gun myth (chapter two), the Choso˘n Chujahak tradition (chapter three), and Korean Protestant Christianity (chapter four through six). A brief conclusion (chapter seven) rounds out the thesis. Through this method I show that the fundamental concern of Korean Protestants with understanding God as Hananim, with community-based consciousness, and with a strong and devout progress toward a holy life, is the creative product of the encounter between the three themes of the accumulated living religious traditions of Korean history as interpreted through both the development of Choso˘n Neo-Confucianism as the philosophical foundation of Korean society and the conservative theology and institutions introduced by Protestant missionaries.
초록/해제
요약 : A proximate goal of this dissertation is both to demonstrate the religious and philosophical relationship between the Choso˘n Chujahak tradition and Korean Protestant Christianity, and to highlight the idiosyncrasies of Korean religiosity by analyzing and explicating the three fundamental themes of the two religious traditions. The ultimate goal of the theological project this dissertation initiates is a new and improved direction for an indigenous Korean Protestant theology that is aware of and respects the accumulated living religious traditions operating within the unique Korean religious context.
