■520    ▼aThis  research  is  a  historiograhic  study  of  a  vital  missionary  work  of  the  American  Presbyterian  missions  and  its  missiological  correlations  to  the  missions  of  the  early  Korean  Presbyterian  Church.
■520    ▼aA  major  phenomenon  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  today  is  her  vital  involvement  in  missionary  work  for  world  evangelization.  Many  Korean  church  historians  as  well  as  missiologists  assume  that  the  missionary  movement  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  is  a  recent  occurrence.  A  thorough  investigation  of  early  Korean  church  history,  however,  reveals  that  the  missionary  movement  did  not  begin  recently.  On  the  contrary,  it  begin  in  the  early  stage  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  church  history  and  was  initiated  by  the  American  Presbyterian  missionaries.
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  the  research  is  to  inquire  in  what  ways  and  to  what  extent  the  American  Presbyterian  Churches  missiologically  contributed  to  the  missions  of  the  early  Korean  Presbyterian  Church.  This  research  is  an  effort  to  emphasize  the  American  Presbyterian  missionaries'  pivotal  role  not  only  as  pioneer  missionaries  but  also  as  participants  in  shaping  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  into  a  missionary  church  from  the  beginning  of  its  history.
■520    ▼aOne  significant  aspect  of  this  research  lies  in  its  innovative  methodology,  which  integrates  emic  and  etic  approaches  to  studying  Korean  church  history  in  order  to  provide  a  balanced  understanding  of  it.
■520    ▼aThe  research  findings  led  to  certain  conclusions.  First,  the  missionary  movement  in  the  nineteenth  century  was  not  limited  to  American  churches  only,  but  it  also  blossomed  in  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church.  Second,  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  has  been  a  missionary  church  from  the  beginning  of  her  formation.  This  research  clearly  shows  that  the  missionary  movement  of  the  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  is  not  a  recent  phenomenon,  but  it  began  early  in  her  history.  Third,  the  origin  and  development  of  the  missionary  movement  of  the  early  Korean  Presbyterian  Church  had  its  rich  missiological  heritage  in  the  American  Presbyterian  missions  and  strongly  resembled  the  missionary  movement  of  the  American  Presbyterian  churches.  Last,  the  insights  gained  from  this  research  should  demonstrate  to  the  contemporary  missionaries  who  engage  in  church  planting  the  value  of  discipled  native  Christians  become  involved  in  missionary  work  from  the  beginning.
