요약 : The study of allusions to sayings of Jesus in the First Epistle of Peter was represented by an exchange of journal articles (New Testament Studies and Biblica) between Dr. Robert Gundry and Dr. Ernest Best about forty years ago. Gundry argued for a longer list of allusions, while Best defended a much shorter list which was limited mostly to blocks of Luke's Gospel. Gundry asserted that the number and location of the allusions to Gospel material followed text plots that supported Petrine authorship of 1 Peter. Sometime later Gerhard Maier also discussed the matter in Gospel Perspectives, vol. 5 (Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 1985), generally siding with Gundry for a longer list of allusions. Many scholars seem to side with Best in seeing evidence for a fewer number of allusions.

요약 : Re-examination of the issue is considered worthwhile for the following reasons: First, Richard Hays in his work Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1989) advanced work on the use of allusions in Scripture. Since then, a more fruitful understanding of allusion has emerged, as well as more objective means to assess their presence and function. Second, it has been recognized that 1 Peter makes extensive use of the Old Testament in both quotations and allusions. An examination of the author's use of Old Testament allusion provides further information to form a standard of measure by which to recognize legitimate allusions according to authorial style. Lastly, two epistles in the first century, the Epistle of James and 1 Clement, also make use of Jesus' sayings. Their time of writing is within the period where oral and written traditions co-existed. Their literary genre is similar to that characterizing 1 Peter, so that their use of Jesus' sayings can provide additional data for forming a reasonable standard of measure to assess allusive presence and function.

요약 : This study finds that First Peter exhibits little use of metalepsis in its allusions to the Old Testament. Examination of the better-attested allusions in the Epistles of James and 1 Clement display no use of metalepsis. Though metalepsis is lacking, the contexts of the alluded texts do help in identifying allusions as well as adding a fuller meaning to the later passages containing allusions. Regarding lexical factors, the better-attested allusions to the Old Testament usually have at least one or two distinctive lexical elements. The same is true for the two epistles (James and 1 Clement) regarding the likely allusions to sayings of Jesus.

요약 : Applying these observations to the matter of allusions to Jesus' sayings in 1 Peter, this study concludes with a list of defensible allusions (seven) that is even shorter than Best's list of possible allusions. This list of allusions and their locations are insufficient to give any significant insight regarding the question of Petrine authorship. Nevertheless, this assessment demonstrated (against Best) that though a block of tradition might be identified, it is not in Luke but in Matthew's Gospel.
