■520    ▼aThis  study  explored  the  inter-relatedness  among  identity,  faith,  trauma  and  loss,  and  re-negotiating  self-understanding  in  a  new  geographical  location.  Seven  Christian  women  from  the  Oromo  cultural  group  of  Ethiopia  were  interviewed.  The  taped  interviews  were  transcribed  and  analyzed  using  qualitative  data  analysis  procedures.  Grounded  theory  served  as  the  methodological  framework  for  this  research.  Identity  was  examined  using  a  self-in-relation  paradigm  in  which  self-construal  is  understood  as  an  interdependent  relationship  between  the  self  and  the  other.  Object  Relations  Theory  provided  a  theoretical  model  for  understanding  this  interdependent  nature  of  self  and  other  relationships  in  the  communal  Oromo  culture.  Trauma  and  loss  were  discussed  using  a  trauma  theory  which  recognized  that  an  event  can  be  traumatic  if  it  caused  the  loss  of  our  core  assumptions  or  beliefs  about  who  we  are  and  the  world  in  which  we  live.  The  necessity  for  meaning-making  and  reshaping  our  lives  following  trauma  and  loss  led  to  a  discussion  of  resiliency,  post-traumatic  growth  and  acculturation.  The  nature  of  faith  and  the  resources  of  the  faith  tradition  were  discussed  in  light  of  Womanist  theology  and  a  theology  of  the  cross  in  which  God  is  understood  as  the  one  who  identifies  with  us  and  suffers  alongside  of  us.  Narrative  theory  allowed  for  an  investigation  into  the  way  in  which  the  women  told  their  stories  to  support  their  own  self-understanding  for  the  life  they  now  live.
