■520    ▼aWidows  appear  frequently  in  the  Hebrew  Bible,  sometimes  moving  behind  the  scene,  at  other  times  vocally  calling  attention  to  their  presence.  In  some  situations  they  successfully  advocated  for  themselves,  in  other  instances  YHWH  and  the  prophets  contended  for  them.  Though  the  patriarchal  mode  of  Scripture  is  largely  attentive  to  male  activities  and  concerns,  careful  reading  discloses  an  impressive  trove  of  material  which  pertains  to  widows.  It  illuminates  their  enterprise  and  particular  conditions.  Therefore,  when  taken  together,  those  textual  references  create  an  unexpectedly  substantial  portrait  of  widowhood.  This  dissertation  is  an  effort  to  more  fully  understand  biblical  Israel  by  shining  a  light  on  a  feminine  category  deserving  of  greater  attention,  the  widows  of  ancient  Israel.
