요약 : This study seeks to discover how mono-ethnic/monocultural minority churches can maximize their capacity to reach out and integrate people of different ethnic/racial backgrounds in the United States. To this end, it studied three Korean-initiated multicultural churches, in addition to one Dutch-initiated multicultural church, because of the potential that Korean Americans pose for the future of American Christianity. The study employs field-based case studies as well as scholarly research.

요약 : As emerging leaders within the growing multicultural church movement, Korean-American Christians are participating in this movement with a greater concern for the Great Commission than for racial reconciliation, which tends to be a dominant focus in historically white or black multicultural American churches. In addition to the foundation laid by key social changes such as the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the 1965 Immigration Act, the missiological concept of the complementarity between particularity and universality and the missional church movement's understanding of the church's nature---being sent, being incarnational, and being contextual---provide needed theological bases to move toward the multicultural church as a reality. New understandings of the Homogenous Unit Principle demonstrate ways of incorporating the strategic benefits of the HUP within a multicultural church.

요약 : In its findings, this study discovered that first-generation Korean senior pastors' vision and support for the second-generation Korean-Americans were crucial in the transition from ethnic church to multicultural church. In addition, members' youthfulness in age and in spirit within the case study churches enabled them to adjust more easily and make many changes. Also, the senior/lead pastors' sharing the pulpit with pastors of different races and their own multicultural family backgrounds were also advantageous in the transition toward a multicultural church. Regarding pull and stay factors, visitors were found to stay mainly because of preaching and/or small groups, rather than for multicultural reasons (with the exception of ethnically/racially mixed couples). Lastly, the study found that evangelism in these churches took place when multicultural churches made intentional efforts to provide many evangelistic programs, events, and small groups for outsiders.

요약 : As its application, this study proposes a model transition process, named the Windmill T-process, to help monocultural churches that want to become multicultural in order to reach out to all nations within a multicultural local context. The Windmill T-process model is divided into two groups of parts---fixed and moving. The five fixed parts of the Windmill T-process make up the windmill's base, and are necessary for monocultural churches in the beginning of the transition: checking for feasibility, casting a vision, becoming independent, adopting a non-ethnic church name, and relocating. The remaining five steps make up the moving parts of the windmill---parts which are constantly in motion: serving the neighbor, refreshing the vision, diversifying leadership, providing cultural intelligence training, and having multicultural worship teams. The Windmill T-process is not a static linear process but an ongoing and revolving one. It implies that the church can develop and maintain the characteristics of a multicultural church only when the five steps in the moving parts are working continually.
