■520    ▼aSince  the  1950's  studies  like  the  The  Bishop  Study    (1958),  The  Sunday  School  Board  Study  (1963),    The  Mahanes  Study  (1978)  have  indicated  that  Southern  Baptists  have  encountered  the  problem  of  biblical  literacy.  Because  this  problem  has  existed  for  so  many  years  the  spiritual  well-being  of  Southern  Baptist  students  is  at  stake,  and  the  perpetuation  of  the  Christian  faith  is  in  jeopardy.
■520    ▼aSince  children  and  youth  are  not  familiar  with  the  foundations  and  essential  elements  of  the  Bible  and  their  faith,  this  study  has  sought  to  take  a  look  back  at  the  very  foundation  of  the  Christian  faith  by  going  back  to  the  root  from  which  the  Christian  educational  system  was  derived---the  Jewish  educational  system.  Through  the  Jewish  people  God  specifically  chose  to  make  known  His  divine  design  for  education  to  all  of  mankind.  He  carefully  communicated  to  His  people  how  He  intended  for  them  to  educate  themselves  and  their  children.  By  examining  the  philosophy  of  education,  the  evolution  of  the  school  system,  the  administration  of  the  system,  the  content  of  education,  the  methods  and  principles  of  teaching,  and  the  role  of  the  teacher  and  student,  this  study  has  rediscovered  the  core  principles  of  the  Jewish  educational  system.  These  principles  have  been  assimilated  into  an  educational  framework  that  when  applied  to  21st  century  Christian  educational  ministries,  is  designed  to  ignite  catalyst  discussions  for  curbing  biblical  illiteracy  and  elicite  evaluation  of  current  ministry  practices  with  the  intent  to  better  engage  21st  century  students,  especially  those  in  Southern  Baptist  churches,  in  their  faith  and  basic  understanding  of  the  Bible.
