■520    ▼aMartin  Luther's  quotation  from  the  title  of  this  project  sets  the  stage  for  the  conversation  between  postmodern  theology  and  Lutheran  thought.  This  quotation,  from  The  Bondage  of  the  Will,  is  meant  to  point  to  an  epistemology  that  relies  on  God  alone.  This  dissertation  demonstrates  how  proclamation  through  word  and  sacrament  is  the  ultimate  authority  for  theology  and  faith  in  Lutheran  thought.  Beginning  by  briefly  examining  postmodern  theology,  Gianni  Vattimo,  Martin  Luther  and  Gerhard  Forde  are  brought  together  as  conversation  partners  in  order  to  examine  how  proclamation  is  a  response  to  Gianni  Vattimo's  theology.  The  result  is  an  interesting  conflux  of  results.  Luther's  three  lights  epistemology,  Vattimo's  focus  on  weak  thought,  kenosis,  and  secularization,  and  Forde's  faithful  use  of  proclamation  in  every  context  bring  about  an  idea  of  proclamation  that  rises  to  the  top  as  epistemological  authority  in  a  postmodern,  or  non-modern,  context.
