초록/해제
요약 : From the onset of the Chosun dynasty under the strong influence of Confucianism in the contemporary era, the rites for honoring ancestors have been regarded as an important element in both individual family rituals as well as in Korean national rituals. The rite of ancestral veneration provides the opportunities to ritualize hyo [filial piety], one of the most important requirements of Confucian ethics, as well as offers the virtual space of union and communion between the dead and the living within the ritual.
초록/해제
요약 : With the introduction of Christianity into Korea in the eighteenth century, the Korean Roman Catholic Christians had to reject the ancestral veneration rite, due to a mandate from the Vatican. This rejection caused five periods of severe persecution of the Korean Roman Catholic Christians by the Chosun government. In 1939, Pope Pius XII rescinded the order, regarding the allowance of the rite of ancestral veneration in China. From that time, the Catholic Church in Korea began to allow the rite of ancestral veneration to take place among Korean Catholics.

요약 : Since the beginning of the Korean Protestantism in the late nineteenth century, the Korean Protestant Churches have continued to enforce the statement that practicing the rite of ancestral veneration rite is considered idolatrous. However, they constructed a Christian ritual for the dead ancestors, the Chu-mo-ye-sik. Despite the practice of this memorial rite in the Korean Protestant Churches, most Korean non-Christians would not agree that the memorial rite appropriately serves as a substitute for a traditional Confucian ancestral veneration rite.
초록/해제
요약 : This tension between Korean Protestantism and the traditional Confucian rite, thus, demands the shaping of a more contextually sensitive Christian rite since the memorial rites of Korean Protestant churches are neither valid nor acceptable for non-Christians. Therefore, this dissertation project researches and subsequently proposes a new model of a contextually-sensitive rite for honoring one's ancestor, using following methodologies: Robert J. Schreiter's theoretical nine-steps for constructing local theology. Graham Hughes' liturgical meaning-making theory based on Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics, and comparative research of the traditional rite of ancestral veneration and the memorial rites of Korean Christianity.
