- 요약 : Over the years, exegetes have proposed various translations for the verb 'ashem, especially within the context of Leviticus 4--5. Scholars, however, have not allotted sufficient attention to the Hittite textual evidence that would illuminate the disputed meaning of the term. This study investigates the representative Hittite confessional and instructions texts and proposes that the Hittite ritual concepts offer a valuable framework in defining the meaning of the verb 'ashem, which occurs in close connection to the verb yada` throughout Leviticus 4-5. In particular, a novel interpretative possibility exits for the term 'ashem in Leviticus 4-5 when we take into account the concept of "to become known" (ishduwa-) in the Instructions for Priests and Temple Officials (CTH 264), which outlines in detail the sancta trespasses and their consequent punishment. The Hittite text is remarkable in that it specifically features the objective declaration of a transgressor's guilty state, which is closely associated with the notion of a divulging of the hidden case "to become known." The study finds that the verb yada` in the earlier layer of Leviticus 4 underscores an objective status of the guilty rather than a subjective perception of an event. Such conclusion is bolstered by the notable formal resemblance between the biblical case of trial by ordeal in Numbers 5:11--31 (cf. Lev 4:13) and the Hittite potion ordeal for the sancta trespasser. The cumulative data affirm that the traditional rendering of the verb 'ashem, such as "to be/become guilty" or "to incur guilt," offers a more viable option for understanding the ritual assumptions underlying Leviticus 4-5, than other alternatives, such as "to feel guilt" (J. Milgrom), "to realize guilt" (N. Kiuchi), and "to suffer guilt's consequences" (J. Sklar).
