초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation focuses on the lives and ministry roles of African American and West African Christians, who participated in the earliest missionary efforts among the people of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in the nineteenth century. Beginning with the transfer of the ABCFM Cape Palmas (Liberia) Mission to "Gaboon" in 1842, the subsequent establishment of the nearby Presbyterian Corisco Mission, in 1850, and the eventual merger of the two missions, in1870, this study draws out the background information on these persons of color, their preparation and status within the mission hierarchy, and their interpersonal relationships in the mission and host communities.
초록/해제
요약 : Men and women of African descent served as the first educators in the Gaboon Mission schools, and as lay preachers/evangelists among the diverse people groups of the interior. Americo-Liberian women provided necessary domestic support for families of the Corisco Mission, and oversight to African boarding schoolchildren. The high turnover of white missionaries, due to illness and death, required their "colored assistants" to fill gaps and assume greater responsibility, which served to breach traditional barriers of race and gender in mission roles and ecclesial leadership. The continual presence of these persons of African descent, and their dedication to the work, proved vital to the survival of both missions. Their silence and anonymity in the published records of the Mission(s), despite their great contribution to the work, raises the question of their perceived role, identity and nationality, and the presence of a "color line" in the mission.
초록/해제
요약 : The juxtaposition of published mission reports and private missionary correspondence and journals reveals decades of debate on the preparation and sending of "colored" missionaries to the field, the increased missionary fears of racial equality and integration, and the evidence that qualified and willing persons of African descent were denied missionary appointment with the Presbyterian Mission.
