■520    ▼aLatin  American  liberation  theology  is  a  modern  theological  movement  still  "in  process"  of  developing  its  method  because  of  its  sense  of  urgency  regarding  the  theological  task.  This  urgency  is  caused  by  ongoing  oppression  and  exploitation  in  Latin  America.  In  order  to  meet  the  challenge  of  understanding  the  oppressive  situation  and  coping  with  it  liberation  theology  has  incorporated  into  its  method  a  biblical  hermeneutic.
■520    ▼aThis  thesis  proposes  that  to  understand  liberation  theology's  biblical  hermeneutic  it  is  helpful  to  examine  the  hermeneutic  of  the  prophet  Jeremiah  because  of  his  analogy  of  method  to  that  of  liberation  theology.  The  analogy  is  predicated  on  a  tri-partite  schema  called  Hermeneutic  of  Appropriation:    (1)  Perceived  Situation  of  Conflict;  (2)  Tension  with  "Core  Religious  Heritage";  (3)  Resolution  of  Tension  resulting  in  choice  of  symbols  with  which  to  interpret  the  conflictual  situation.
■520    ▼aJeremiah's  situation  of  conflict  is  the  Babylonian  threat  and  failure  by  the  people  and  their  leaders  to  abide  by  the  covenant  responsibility  of  justice  which  is  a  result  of  an  overconfidence  in  the  Davidic  promises.  Tension  with  "Core  Religious  Heritage"  is  based  on  differing  interpretations  of  the  Sinai  and  Davidic  covenant  traditions  as  expressed  in  the  political  context.  Jeremiah's  resolution  of  the  tension  is  his  choice  of  literary  forms  and  symbols  out  of  Sinai  covenant  thinking  to  express  judgment  and  graciousness,  e.g.  the('  )RIB,  rhetorical  questions,  Divine  Warrior,  harlotry.
■520    ▼aTwo  representative  liberation  theology  exegetes,  Jose  Miranda  and  Severino  Croatto,  have  as  their  perceived  situation  of  conflict  the  current  condition  in  Latin  America  and  failure  of  Church  and  academy  to  acknowledge  the  "radical"  dimension  of  Scripture.  For  Miranda  the  tension  is  with  ambiguity  in  papal  social  teaching  and  belief  in  Jesus  as  trans-temporal  Messiah.  For  Croatto  the  tension  is  in  his  attempt  to  subordinate  orthodoxy  to  orthopraxis.  Miranda  resolves  the  tension  through  philosophy  and  economics  in  dialogue  with  the  Bible,  while  Croatto  does  so  through  linguistics  and  semiotics  in  dialogue  with  the  Bible.
■520    ▼aAfter  comparisons  and  contrasts  between  Jeremiah  and  Miranda  and  Jeremiah  and  Croatto  regarding  hermeneutical  method  in  the  framework  of  the  Hermeneutic  of  Appropriation  schema,  some  conclusions  are  drawn.
