초록/해제
요약 : Using the tools of conceptual analysis ("ordinary language" philosophy) and literary criticism, and adopting a synchronic approach, this dissertation explores the way the book of Jeremiah renders an identity description of the prophet and how this description functions for a reading of the book as religious literature.

요약 : A major focus is hermeneutical. The study challenges the adequacy of narrowly referential notions of meaning that value the text primarily as a means for reconstructing the "Jeremiah of history," and in the process neglect the depiction that the text itself intends. The textual depiction is shown to rely on certain non-referential uses of first-person language, including metaphor, pre-eminently that of the "heart," language by which selves come into being and take on their characteristic shapes.

요약 : Exegetically, the study attempts to show precisely how the textual persona enacts his identity as a prophet through his speech. In communal laments and individual confessions alike, the identity Jeremiah enacts is seen to entail an identification with both the people and the God between whom he mediates such that his life becomes metamorphic of the divine-human relationship. At the same time, the prophet is presented as a model for emulation by the faithful. The overall effect is that Jeremiah is rendered as a paradigm, a figure of both metaphorical and exemplary significance.
초록/해제
요약 : The final chapter connects this analysis with work being done in aesthetics and literary theory on the phenomenology of reading. It is argued that the depiction of the prophet as a paradigm has a uniquely self-involving force for readers who approach the text as scripture.
