■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  the  dissertation  was  to  analyze  rhetorically  passages  in  the  Book  of  Jeremiah  which  address  the  worship  of  gods  other  than  Yahweh,  in  order  to  determine  the  particular  methodology  and  attendant  motifs.
■520    ▼aChapter  I  contains  a  rhetorical  analysis  of  terms  related  to  deity.  In  the  examination  of  proper  names  of  deities,  it  was  revealed  that  the  use  of  opprobrious  metonyms  for  the  deities,  such  as  "worthlessness,"  "falsehood"  and  "shame,"  played  a  major  role  in  the  prophets  polemical  style.  In  many  contexts,  these  metonyms  become  titles  or  ascriptions  for  these  "other  gods,"  even  though  a  specific  name  of  a  god  is  not  used  in  the  context.  These  descriptive  images  of  deity  were  also  indicative  of  the  quality  of  life  which  surrounded  the  worship  of  impotent  and  ineffective  gods.
■520    ▼aIn  Chapter  II  the  terms  for  the  cult  were  examined  under  three  categories:  places  of  worship,  activity  of  worship  and  implements  of  worship.  In  idolatry  polemic  contexts,  worship  of  Yahweh  is  always  delineated  in  terms  of  repentance,  obedience  and  repudiation  of  the  other  gods,  never  in  cultic  nomenclature.  Degradation  of  the  cult,  epitomized  in  the  sacrifice  of  children,  had  rendered  such  activity  shameful  and  worthless.
■520    ▼aForms  of  polemic  were  investigated  in  Chapter  III.  The  prophetic  author/editor  made  liberal  use  of  standard  prophetic  forms,  but  he  demonstrates  a  considerable  freedom  in  adapting  these  forms  to  his  urgent  message.  Chiasmus,  inclusio,  repetition  of  various  types,  ellipsis  and  expansion  are  among  the  rhetorical  adaptations  utilized.  These  evince  a  highly  developed  literary  style.  The  "accusation"  components  of  the  forms  have  the  same  theme:  Israel  is  about  to  be  judged  because  of  her  idolatry.
■520    ▼aChapter  IV  summarized  the  motifs  which  dominate  the  idolatry  polemics  of  Jeremiah.  Motifs  related  to  deity  provide  a  sharp  contrast  between  the  attributes  of  Yahweh  and  the  other  gods.  Motifs  relative  to  humankind  focus  upon  the  degeneration  of  humanity  as  a  result  of  idol  worship.  Motifs  related  to  nature  reveal  the  superiority  of  Yahweh  over  the  forces  of  nature,  and  the  natural  benefits  which  accrue  to  those  who  worship  Yahweh.
