요약 : This dissertation argues that Jonathan Edwards consistently maintained "postmillennial" expectations of history, according to which the kingdom of God would be realized, at least in part, through the work of the church in the world.
초록/해제
요약 : This study first defines "postmillennialism" as a historicized understanding of the kingdom of God, contrasting this with "premillennialism," an eschatologized understanding, and "amillennialism," a spiritualized understanding. It then summarizes the present state of scholarly interpretation of Edwards' own position. Specific attention is given to Goen's influential thesis that Edwards, as a postmillennialist, encouraged "Christian effort in the extension of the kingdom," and to the subsequent arguments of Bryant and Stein that Edwards actually abandoned postmillennial expectations of an imminent millennium in favor of amillennialism.
초록/해제
요약 : To resolve these claims, the study first demonstrates that Edwards never expected an imminent millennium, but rather consistently dated the onset of the millennium at around A.D. 2000. However, it then shows that Edwards was nevertheless always anticipating the imminent arrival of something he found just as effective as the millennium in encouraging Puritan activism in the world, the downfall of the portion of Satan's kingdom ruled by "Antichrist" (the papacy, in his pre-ecumenical view).

요약 : Next, the study demonstrates that during the Great Awakening, Edwards believed this downfall actually to be occurring through the revivalistic progress of reformed Protestantism. Even after the Awakening, he continued to expect another great revival, of which it had been the "forerunner." In his last years he was least sanguine about immediate historical prospects, but he nevertheless maintained postmillennial expectations of how the kingdom of God would be realized.

요약 : Samuel Hopkins' views, invoked by Bryant, are considered briefly to illustrate the contrast between the motivation his quasi-amillennial position offered and that Edwards' truly postmillennial stance provided for a broad program of renewal. Finally, this study demonstrates that Edwards articulated his own personal sense of theological vocation in postmillennial terms. He understood himself to be one of the eschatological preachers symbolically foreshadowed in the sixth vial of Rev. 16:12 whose mission was to extirpate Protestant heresies and so clear the way for Antichrist's downfall.
