초록/해제
요약 : Theological reflections on the prophetic are marked by pervasive ambiguity which is manifested in conflicting claims about the nature of the prophetic and the prophet's relation to God and the world. This systematic issue is linked to a socio/historical problematic which can be seen in the mixed response of churches in the Reformed tradition to racism as it was addressed in the Civil Rights movement.
초록/해제
요약 : Two Reformed theologians are examined for resources to address these problematics. A review of John Calvin's understanding of the prophetic reveals that he sees interpretation of the Word as a central feature. He also stresses its christocentric nature, its option for the poor, and its relation to time, Spirit and community. However, questions arise as to whether Calvin sees the prophetic office as a continuing one.
초록/해제
요약 : Analysis of Karl Barth's position shows him to share many of the themes articulated by Calvin, including the interpretive nature of the prophetic. While Barth affirms the continuing existence of the office, he displays ambiguity as to the relation of the prophetic witness to social and political reality. Remaining questions drive the discussion to the level of model construction.
초록/해제
요약 : Drawing upon Calvin's and Barth's theologies of the prophetic, a model of prophetic understanding and activity is constructed utilizing hermeneutical categories to provide structure and to unlock the implications of their thought. It is argued that the model is consistent with the Reformed tradition, theoretically coherent and praxis oriented. The model features three major, interconnected aspects: the temporal, communal and praxis. The model functions disclosively to reveal the essential nature of the prophetic, and heuristically to suggest the compatibility of social and political analysis with Reformed thought on the prophetic.
초록/해제
요약 : The model is validated in a case study of the prophetic witness of Martin Luther King, Jr. The model's disclosive dimension is confirmed by utilizing its components to give a comprehensive and systematic analysis of an instance of King's prophetic witness. An examination of the importance of King's social/political location for his witness confirms the heuristic dimension of the model.
