요약 : Japanese people, living in a culture and social structure deeply intertwined with pagan traditions, face various hindrances to become Christians and to remain in the faith. The study on commitment factors of those who remained in the faith, therefore, may provide a clue for an effective evangelism in Japan. This study aims to investigate both positive and negative factors that influence the commitment of the Japanese Evangelical Christians in Japan Evangelical Church Association.
초록/해제
요약 : Based on Finney's model of "religious commitment factors" (1978, 19-35) and Paul Hiebert's model of "levels of cognition" (1975, 46), a new theoretical framework was developed. Doctrinal, communal, religious experiential, and ritual factors were analyzed according to the five stages of commitment: context, conversion, incorporation, crises, and recommitment.
초록/해제
요약 : Although communal factors were the most often mentioned by the informants, the commitment seemed to be enhanced when converts were wholistically cared of. Understanding the biblical concept of God was the foundation of developing sound doctrines and Christian worldview, which helped the Japanese converts to diffuse the traditional monistic cosmology. The comprehensiveness of Christianity influenced Japanese converts who were used to compartmentalized deities and religious practices.
초록/해제
요약 : Commitment was enhanced when the understanding of Christianity was integrated with religious experiences. A sense of personal relationship with God affirmed the commitment of the believers.

요약 : The ritual factor was infrequently mentioned by interviewees, yet rituals seemed important for the Japanese psyche. Baptism provided a social and psychological "frame" around the believer that "seals" their commitment. Formalism in rituals, being so natural for Japanese religiosity, may indicate their prizing forms over its underlying spiritual significance.

요약 : Thus, this study suggests the following four strategies for Japanese churches: (1) revitalizing currently existing Christian rituals, (2) emphasizing continuing adult Christian education including post-baptism classes and adult Sunday school, (3) training believers to contextualize their faith for the purpose of evangelism and missions, and (4) utilizing an "organically structured" model of discipleship for church administration.
