요약 : The notion of rest stands in direct opposition to many ideals of adolescent identity within American culture. Widespread sleep deprivation, the valorization of busyness, and the ubiquitous nature of mobile technology among young people point to this reality. Though developmental science insists healthy development depends on adequate rest, prominent voices within culture go so far as deriding sleep and rest as signs of weakness. Within this cultural context, the church also maintains various explicit and implicit ideals for its youth. Though the Sabbath points to rest as integral to the identity of God's people, the church too frequently echoes, reinforces, and occasionally attempts to outdo (consider a youth group lock-in) the culture's bias against rest. Drawing on the theology of Karl Barth and the Scriptural witness to the Sabbath, this dissertation constructs a vibrant practical theology of the Sabbath in the context of American young people. It insists that Sabbath rest is, in fact, integral to the identity of God and God's people. After considering adolescent development and various contemporary cultural markers of adolescence, it specifically examines a cohort of high school seniors who attend a private Christian school in the northeast. It then turns to Barth and Scripture to unveil an image of the Sabbath as radical and disorienting grace which both lays bare the lesser gods of young people and invites young people to know themselves first and foremost as God's beloved children. The dissertation concludes by imagining concretely what Sabbath practice might look like in the context of the contemporary youth considered herein.
