요약 : This project investigates how the Long Ending of Mark (16:9-20) creates narrative closure for the Second Gospel. Acknowledging while minimizing the major point of scholarly contention over this famous manuscript variant---its debatable origins, authentic or spurious---I focus instead on the way in which the Long Ending repairs the apparent disappointment of the women's silence and flight from Jesus' empty tomb (Mark 16:8).
초록/해제
요약 : One of the previously frantic and silent women (16:8), Mary Magdalene, reappears in 16:9 and becomes the first witness to the resurrected Jesus (16:10-11). This narrative correction, made by a second-century author to the earliest ending of Mark's Gospel, restores a female disciple to prominence as a reliable witness whose testimony proves accurate in 16:12-14. Mary's brief but exemplary reemergence in the narrative contrasts with the repeated disbelief of the eleven male disciples closest to Jesus within the appendix (16:11, 13-14). Both depictions, of Mary and of the Eleven, likely rely on the canonical resurrection accounts but selectively remix the information in novel ways.
초록/해제
요약 : The conclusion in 16:9-20 draws together several significant narrative and theological threads from Mark 1:1-16:8. Discipleship and its intersections with faith, or the lack thereof, are themes that modern readers of Mark find prominent throughout the Gospel. Notably, an ancient reader of Mark also followed these narrative trajectories.
초록/해제
요약 : Although the Long Ending wastes no time in reestablishing Mary Magdalene's place as first witness to the risen Lord, in several, compact episodes the expanded conclusion dwells on the Eleven's lingering ignominy of repeated disbelief. That is most unexpected. A frightened woman who fled the tomb in disobedient silence becomes the paradigmatic witness to Jesus' resurrection. By going and telling the news, the unlikely witness, Mary Magdalene, becomes the first of many disciples, including the Eleven, who go into all the world to preach the good news (16:15, 20).
