요약 : Black South Africans have used their choral tradition as a means of resisting oppression and preserving their cultural identity from the era of colonialism, through apartheid, and into the present-day AIDS crisis. This document explores the ways South Africans have drawn upon this powerful music to spread information, protest the government, provide support to those who are suffering, raise funds and awareness of the epidemic abroad, and preserve their cultural identity amidst the devastation of the epidemic. Research for this project included extensive observation of South African choirs that used choral music to address various aspects of HIV, and comprehensive interviews of South African choral conductors, singers, community health workers, arts administrators, students, and community leaders over the course of thirteen years (2002-2015). In analyzing the music of the AIDS struggle, the author studied the broad range of HIV-related topics that were addressed through the music, the style of composition or utilization of adapted folk and anti-apartheid songs, and the different audiences for which the music was intended. The author evaluated the opinions of South African musicians about their own ability to use choral music to effectively address the epidemic, and compared those judgments with the theories of leading experts in the field of South African public health, concluding that traditional black South African choral music is, in fact, an effective way to address the epidemic on a number of important levels. Recommendations for future research include documenting this use of music with digital media, making HIV choral projects more appealing to potential funders, creating strategies for a nationwide implementation of choral music to address future social and political issues, and teaching this music internationally to help raise awareness of the struggle.
