요약 : Simulation has been incorporated into nursing programs as a means to manage faculty shortages, lack of clinical sites, increasing enrollment, and to help prepare the future nursing force to care for complex patients. The Carnegie Foundation study called for schools of nursing to bridge the gap between current nursing practice and how we prepare our students for that practice. Simulation has risen to this call with nursing institutions investing in highly technical simulation centers.

요약 : As simulation has become integrated and embedded in nursing education research to support its inclusion has been prolific. Research that is absent from the literature is the influence of simulation on a student's nursing practice after graduation. Students graduate but it is unknown if or how simulation influences their practice. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to understand how simulation in undergraduate nursing programs influences a graduated student's nursing practice. Analysis of one on one interviews produced the following themes: knowing through simulated reality, self-awareness, stimulating thinking, knowing through experience, learning about communication, and blending of learning. The findings showed that nurse participants who experienced simulation in their undergraduate programs found the use of simulation to be an instructional method that influenced their nursing practice. Recommendations for future research, nursing education, and practice were included.
