초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation examines synchronically and diachronically the forms and functions of birth annunciation scenes in the Hebrew Bible (HB) and the ancient Near East (ANE). In this context, a birth annunciation is defined as a heavenly or human being foretelling the conception/birth and destiny of a specific, special child(ren) to a directly affected human---the future parent or an unrelated king---or a god(s). The HB birth annunciation scenes are Gen 15:1-6, 16:7-14, 17:1-22; 18:1-16, 25:20-23; Judg 13:2-23; 2 Sam 7:4-17; 1 Kgs 13:1-3; 2 Kgs 4:11-16; 1 Chr 22:8-10; and Isa 7:10-17. The ANE annunciation scenes are in the Egyptian "The Prophecies of Neferti," "King Cheops and the Magicians," and three instances of the "Birth-Myth of the God King;" the Ugaritic "Keret" and "Aqhat;" the Hittite "Appu;" and Sumerian "Shulgi G.".

요약 : Each ANE and HB annunciation scene is analyzed in its final form to determine its form, functions, and date of composition. ANE and HB annunciations are then compared and contrasted to discover similarities and differences between their forms and functions. After this synchronic analysis, the diachronic issues of literary borrowing and genre development are addressed.
초록/해제
요약 : This study yields several conclusions. Notably, there is no single, fixed form or function for ANE and HB annunciations. Rather, there are various and repeated forms and functions. Nearly every annunciation shares five formal elements---revelations about a child(ren)'s future conception/birth, gender(s), destiny(ies), and the mother's and father's identities---as well as four functions---revealing the conception/birth of a specific child(ren); revealing the child(ren)'s destiny(ies); legitimating the destiny(ies); and asserting divine control over progeny and destiny. ANE and HB birth annunciations generally differ in that most ANE annunciations legitimate a king's reign and elevate the high god's status while most HB annunciations constitute, reflect, or advance a covenant and test, answer, castigate, or solidify the faith/doubt of the annunciation's recipient. There is also no discernible literary borrowing or development between ANE and HB annunciations. Instead, the annunciation seemingly arose independently in Egypt, Sumer, and the common cultural environment that encompassed Hatti, Ugarit, and Israel. This phenomenon can be attributed to each (group of) culture(s) addressing a similar aim (proclaiming/legitimating the special birth and destiny of a specific child[ren)) with a similar conceptual milieu (a function-oriented ontology and theistic worldview).
