■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  a  study  of  paronomasia,  or  plays  on  words,  in  the  narrative  portions  of  the  books  of  the  Hebrew  Bible  known  as  the  Former  Prophets.  The  author  first  presents  a  summary  of  the  history  of  the  study  of  paronomasia  in  the  Hebrew  Bible.  He  then  offers  a  taxonomic  scheme  whereby  examples  of  plays  on  words  can  be  classified  according  to  their  type  or  form.  In  the  major  portion  of  this  thesis  the  author  catalogues,  describes,  and  explains  over  two  hundred  fifty  examples  of  paronomasia  in  the  Former  Prophets  according  to  their  form.  Additionally,  in  his  discussion  of  plays  on  proper  names,  he  highlights  a  form  of  name  paronomasia  that  has  not  received  adequate  recognition,  a  form  which  he  terms  "narrational  name  puns."  The  author  also  draws  attention  to  two  heretofore  under-recognized  functions  of  paronomasia:  to  anticipate  future  events  (which  he  terms  "anticipatory  paronomasia")  and  to  confirm  past  events  ("confirmatory  paronomasia").
