요약 : With the advent of the conceptual approach to metaphor, the analysis of metaphor in biblical studies has become quite popular. Previous studies have been quick to apply the conceptual approach with modest success, but they have not exploited its full potential. In addition, many of these studies have not inquired into the significant relationship between metaphor ("conceptual parallelism") and the linguistic parallelism in biblical Hebrew poetry. By proposing a poetics for metaphor (i.e., how metaphors are formed and operate) in biblical poetry, this study gives biblical scholars additional tools and procedures for how to interpret metaphors. This poetics of metaphor offers dearly defined metaphor mechanisms (e.g., elaboration, extension, mapping according to the Invariance Principle, composition, etc.) as lenses for evaluating whether the interpretation of a given metaphor makes sense. It is the recognition of these mechanisms that explains "where" and how to analyze metaphors, especially the interpretively difficult metaphors. Applying this study's methodology reveals how unconventional (novel) metaphors are often subtle in form. In fact, these nuances, which often are unnoticed by scholars, play a significant role in a metaphor's meaning. By directing the reader to ask how these unconventional metaphors are unique (e.g., in their metaphorical extensions and elaborations), readers can recognize and analyze how a metaphor's details are significant.

요약 : Chapter one surveys the critical issues concerning the interpretation of metaphors, introduces the conceptual approach to metaphor, and evaluates past studies of biblical metaphors. Chapter two examines the differences and similarities between metaphor and other forms of figurative language (implicature, metonymy, and hyperbole). Chapter three further examines the different forms of metaphor. Chapter four outlines a poetics for unconventional metaphor that is based upon poetic parallelism and conceptual processes of metaphor in order to demonstrate how unconventional metaphors achieve their meanings. Chapter five presents a corpus analysis of one conceptual metaphor, PEOPLE ARE ANIMALS, in the book of Jeremiah in order to exemplify the value of a poetics of metaphor in the exegetical process. Chapter six concludes by examining macro-level trends from the corpus analysis.
