요약 : Divine emotion is a ubiquitous feature of ancient Near Eastern texts. These documents ascribe to deities love, anger, joy, desire and so forth. This dissertation treats divine sentiment, primarily hate in Ugaritic, biblical Hebrew, and Akkadian. Using a comparative, interdisciplinary, lexical study approach, this analysis endeavors to (1) define how the connotations associated with ancient human hate apply to the realm of the gods, (2) identify hate's position within the matrix of general divine antipathy, (3) adduce the cause(s) of divine hate, (4) note its theology (or theologies), and (5) explore the possible impact that one author's conception of divine hate may have had on that of another.
초록/해제
요약 : After an introductory chapter (which addresses the history of research and the project's methodology, scope and limitations), the second chapter identifies the semantic range of hate in the human realm as expressed in Ugaritic literature, the Hebrew Bible, and Akkadian. Chapter 3 discusses hate as a part of the word field denoting divine antipathy (e.g., anger, hostility, abhorrence). Chapters 4 and 5 adduce occurrences of divine hate in West and East Semitic languages. This emotion is ascribed to the gods (or God) in Ugaritic (two occurrences), Hebrew (seventeen occurrences), and Akkadian (twelve occurrences). For each occurrence, this project discusses the Sitz im Leben, identifying the reason(s) for the hate and any clear theology. Chapter 6 provides a comparative and contrastive analysis for all occurrences, which invite such treatment. The conclusion (chapter 7) rounds out the dissertation.
