요약 : The purpose of this study was to generate a grounded theory of how Christian non-LGBT mental health professionals who once perceived a conflict between their Christian beliefs and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT) affirmation went about effectively resolving this dilemma. Mental health supervisors and educators have asserted that Christian trainees must reconcile any conflict between their beliefs and LGBT affirmation to meet professional competency standards. Yet few studies have investigated those who have effectively done so. The researcher interviewed 15 non-LGBT licensed mental health professionals reporting to have successfully resolved a conflict between their Christian beliefs and LGBT affirmation and analyzed their responses for common themes and subthemes. The research question in this study was "How did these non-LGBT Christian mental health professionals successfully reconcile a perceived conflict between LGBT affirmation and their Christian beliefs?" The finding was that they did so "by maintaining sufficient relational equilibrium to counterbalance the risk of rejection by God and others, while expanding connection with God and with others to support LGBT affirmation." Influential factors such as expanding relational diversity, encountering evidence that LGBT orientation "is not a choice" (which translated for participants to "it's not a sin"), and deepening one's trust in God helped participants maintain sufficient relational equilibrium to allow for reconciliation. Overall, participants reconciled this conflict when they discovered that LGBT affirmation, rather than threatening relational connection, expanded and deepened their connection with others and with God. These findings hold implications for educators and supervisors in the mental health field working with nonaffirming or conflicted Christian trainees.
