■520    ▼aThis  thesis  describes  the  birth  and  growth  of  the  "Jun  Fukuin"  churches;  the  Japan  Evangelistic  Band,  the  Japan  Holiness  Church,  and  the  Japanese  Alliance  Christian  Church.  These  were  the  products  of  the  evangelistic  work  of  interdenominational  missions  from  England  and  the  United  States.  They  started  their  activities  in  the  1890s  or  1900s,  and  began  to  grow  from  1910  onward.  They  advocated  a  personal  experience  of  the  Holy  Spirit  rather  than  a  dogmatic  and  doctrinal  creed.  Consequently  they  brought  a  new  movement  into  the  older  Japanese  churches,  which  had  become  stagnated  in  their  evangelism  partly  through  the  influence  of  new  liberal  theology.  It  examines  both  the  contextual  and  institutional  factors  which  contributed  to  either  the  growth  or  stagnation  of  the  churches  in  1890-1939.
