초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation explores the nature and scope of the influence of Neo-Confucianism on the construction of Korean selfhood. Utilizing Korean indigenous psychology and a critical dialogue with Western self-theory, it suggests basic principles for a Korean based pastoral care that draws upon indigenous Korean principles.
초록/해제
요약 : The fields of pastoral care and counseling and pastoral theology in Korea has looked primarily to the West for its theories and methods. Recognizing the need for constructing a new concept of the self that can address the experience of Koreans, this dissertation tries to demonstrate that the Korean self is constituted by various sources within traditional Korean culture.
초록/해제
요약 : Korean culture is deeply infused with religious tradition. In order to understand the Korean self it is imperative that the influence of religion be appreciated. Korean religion is more than mere belief in a supernatural being. It includes a way of life and worldview. It is fundamental to Koreans.
초록/해제
요약 : While it is true that Buddhism and Christianity are highly visible organized religions in contemporary South Korea, Confucianism and shamanism continue to be influences on Korean life. Among these religions, my primary focus will be on Korean Confucianism because I believe it strongly influences Korean behavior and relationship patterns. This dissertation will be a preliminary, exploratory study of the nature and scope of the influence of Confucianism on the construction of selfhood in contemporary Korea.
초록/해제
요약 : The first chapter of this dissertation examines the Confucian understanding of Korean self reflected in T'oegye Yi's works. This chapter provides definitions of the self from both Confucian and Western orientations. The second chapter provides a conceptual framework delineating the indigenous Korean perspective of the self. Chapter three explores the contours of the foundational concepts of the Confucian self such as cheong, han, woori, and chemyun. The conclusion provides an overview of some of the crucial issues in the creation of an indigenous Korean pastoral psychology.
초록/해제
요약 : The ultimate goal of this dissertation is to make a contribution to the construction of the foundation of an authentic Korean pastoral theology, care and counseling.
