요약 : Demonstrating the existence of a discernible faith healing movement in America fully equipped with its own particular doctrine, leaders, and popular following, this study traces the historical and theological development of the movement from its inception in the middle of the nineteenth century through the birth of the Pentecostal movement in the early twentieth century. The key theological presupposition of the movement is the belief that physical disease is cured by the supernatural intervention of God through the prayer of faith. The movement's significance lies in its uniqueness as the first to popularize a concept of salvation which includes health and healing as integral parts.

요약 : In tracing the movement's rootage, the influence of both the nineteenth century European faith healing advocates and the American holiness movement are examined. The holiness movement provided the foundational theology, leaders, and methodology for the healing movement. When one accepts the basic presupposition of the faith healing movement that sickness is ultimately related to sin and satan, and the holiness movement's presupposition that the sanctified believer is endued with the Pentecostal power of the Book of Acts which gives him power over sin and satan, then the believer also has power over sickness. This thesis and the interwoven ministries of holiness and healing advocates provided the basis for the intimate connection between the two movements.

요약 : The study also suggests that faith healing was foundational to Pentecostalism in that faith healers were the first American Pentecostals. It was the faith healing movement which provided the miraculous atmosphere of "signs and wonders" necessary to make the gift of glossalalia acceptable to the multitudes.

요약 : Significantly, this paper will contribute to the study initiated by Timothy Smith on the relationship of revivalism and social reform. Since the motivation of the participants of the American divine healing movement was to meet the desperate and critical physical needs of the destitute, the neglected, and the rejected of society, it was consistent that as a group they clearly exemplified the social gospel concerns of the nineteenth century by providing educational, social, and rehabilitation opportunities to the masses.
