요약 : The dissertation shows that, for Tertullian, holiness (perfection, sanctification) means fullness or completeness, the attaining of all that God intends one to become. This is supported by a study of his vocabulary. He uses both perficere and sanctificare to mean completeness, fullness, the complete expression of the Christian life. Theologically, this means the restoration of the lost likeness to God; morally, it means the enabling one to live by grace a life of fullness (which means a life of purity). The same conclusion is drawn from the study of Tertullian's use of Biblical texts on holiness.

요약 : Tertullian's theology centers on the doctrine of recapitulation, which is a theology of salvation based on Irenaeus. In Christ, original sin is overcome, the head of the race is restored, and the possibility for man to live as God intended is opened up in a new way. The Holy Spirit empowers man to follow the example of Christ and opens the way to sanctification. The implications of this theology are explored through a study of baptism, ethics, and the holiness of the church. Baptism is seen as the sacrament of sanctification. Both Tertullian's ethical system and his concept of the church are seen as expressions of response to the grace of God, not as a legal system.

요약 : Martyrdom is the final perfection of the Christian life, both because it carries the possibility of washing out in blood sins committed after baptism and because it is the full and complete expression of love.
초록/해제
요약 : Tertullian's concepts of holiness do not change in the course of his life as a Christian (contrary to popular conceptions). Throughout his career, he uses the same words with the same meanings. There is likewise no evidence that his thought was changed radically because of Montanism. His basic position is the same in both his Catholic and his Montanist works. His theology of the Spirit is Biblical, rather than Montanist.
