요약 : The purpose of this dissertation was to examine Charles Finney's theology of sanctification and to determine its place in his understanding of religious experience. The results suggested that sanctification was central to Finney's total perspective of religious experience. By examining his view of sanctification, one can better understand his entire theological system and the various stages of his productive ministry.

요약 : The study focused on the stages of Finney's life as pastor, professor, revivalist, and college president. After a decade of revival preaching in the 1820's, Finney became increasingly concerned with the quality of conversions which occurred through his "new measures." This concern motivated him to emphasize sanctification along with conversion during the remaining years of his active ministry. Nearly all of his writings, which were related to sanctification, were written from this period--1830 to 1860.
초록/해제
요약 : The scope of the study centered on Finney's theological, psychological and historical perspectives regarding sanctification. The contexts, influences, and developmental stages of his sanctification views were examined. He, more than any other American revivalist, explored the meaning of life after conversion.
초록/해제
요약 : Finney believed that sanctification could be complete in two senses. First, "entire sanctification" occurred at conversion when the Christian became fully obedient and entirely consecrated to God. Secondly, the Christian experienced "perfect sanctification" as a process of peak religious experiences following conversion. Sinlessness, the Christian's eradication of personal selfishness, was the fruit of perfect sanctification. Though a perfectly sanctified Christian would not sin, that did not prevent him or her from being tempted. According to Finney, Christians should thoroughly use and apply all the means of grace to prevent them from sinning, and to secure their continued sanctification. Struggles with temptation would occur throughout life. As one struggled with singlemindedness to please God, progress in sanctification was made. As one became absorbed in benevolent love, the mind ceased to concentrate on carnal pleasures.
초록/해제
요약 : Finney believed that sanctification only occurred through the constant appropriation of faith through Christ. Christ then enabled the Christian's moral self to become like His own. He concluded that Christians had the moral ability to freely choose the life of holy love and sinless perfection. Once perfected, Christians were empowered to transform society.
