■520    ▼aSpecial  experiences  with  God  during  the  course  of  worship  are  highly  valued.  These  experiences,  however  are  not  only  for  the  stirring  of  the  emotions.
■520    ▼aIt  is  my  contention  in  this  project  that  social  concern  was  a  vital  part  of  the  Holiness  movement  that  gave  birth  to  modern  day  fundamentalism.  The  nineteenth  century  Holiness  movement,  which  began  in  Europe  and  spread  to  America,  was  engaged  in  abolishing  the  slave  trade,  prison  reform,  terminating  child  labor,  building  orphanages  and  caring  for  the  poor.  Such  social  activity  was  not  incidental  to  our  church  fathers  but  an  integral  part  of  the  Christian  witness.
■520    ▼aToday  social  concern  is  lost  in  most  Evangelical  circles.  We  have  descended  into  ourselves,  and  have  disconnected  ourselves  from  the  community.  All  across  this  nation  and  around  the  world,  there  is  an  explosion  of  human  need.  The  helping  agencies,  emergency  housing,  shelters  and  food  pantries  state  to  state  are  unable  to  cope  with  the  numbers  seeking  assistance.  Case  workers  and  volunteers  are  overworked,  and  the  need  for  donation  of  food,  clothing,  medical  care,  and  money  are  in  great  demand.  In  the  light  of  these  circumstances,  how  can  the  church  stand  idly  by  and  do  nothing?
■520    ▼aAs  Pastor  of  the  Springfield  Church  of  God,  with  headquarters  in  Cleveland,  Tennessee,  I  felt  challenged  to  call  our  congregation  to  faithfulness,  and  to  proclaim  the  whole  Christ,  not  part  but  the  whole  Gospel.  If  Christ  shapes  our  witness,  we  must  follow  him.  We  must  bring  the  good  news  of  salvation  that  changes  lives,  and  we  must  do  the  good  works  of  mercy  that  will  heal  the  hurts  of  those  who  suffer.  The  times  in  which  we  live  demand  that  the  proclamation  of  the  Gospel  be  evidenced  by  a  Christ-like  concern  for  both  the  body  as  well  as  the  soul.
■520    ▼aIn  March  of  1987,  twelve  members  of  our  church  heeded  this  call,  came  together  as  a  group  and  began  to  take  seriously  the  social  side  of  the  Gospel.  As  a  result,  there  is  new  life  in  our  church,  the  atmosphere  is  positive  and  upbeat,  and  the  level  of  interest  and  awareness  of  community  life  has  increased  enormously.  (Abstract  shortened  with  permission  of  author.).
