요약 : This dissertation is a study of ascetics' perceptions of themselves and their role in the world in western Europe in the period c. 800-c. 1100. People who took up lives of professional, permanent asceticism--monks, recluses, and hermits--became "dead to the world" on entering the religious life. But all contact was not lost with the world that pressed in upon the cloister. There was recurring tension between the ideals of withdrawal from the world and desire to work within the world for the good of society. In the Middle Ages this tension was perceived as being love of God and love of neighbor. Could God be served properly in the world? How is one to "love his neighbor?".

요약 : The Germanic society that inherited the Late Antique and early medieval ideal of separation from the world reinterpreted it. The Carolingians espoused the notion that ascetics should be segregated from the secular society around them, but the reason was above all the perceived need for ascetics to pray for the rest of society. Ascetics had to preserve ritual purity for their prayers to be heard. This system left less flexibility for the individual ascetic. He was part of a group, performing an important social function; there was little room for individual religious goals or needs.
초록/해제
요약 : This image of collective holiness gradually broke down in the mid-tenth century, as part of a greater revolution perceptions and expectations. Ascetics began to move into the world, first as missionaries and soon as preachers of moral reform to the Christian population. Ascetics gradually redefined their position in society, based upon both the Carolingian traditions they had inherited and the early Christian models they rediscovered and applied with new vigor. They came to see themselves not just as members of prayer institutions, but as the spiritual leaders of society. Through their separation from the normal temptations of secular life they had attained greater moral and spiritual understanding, and they felt a duty to use this insight to save the souls of their "neighbors," their fellow humans who were still in the world.
