■520    ▼aThe  problem.  Although  initially  began  as  a  church  for  the  poor,  the  Church  of  the  Nazarene  divested  itself  of  any  ministries  which  might  be  construed  as  supportive  of  the  "social  gospel."  This  divestment  began  in  the  early/mid  1900's  and  continued  until  approximately  the  1960's.  From  that  time  until  the  present  the  general  church  has  become  gradually  more  aware  of  its  responsibility  to  minister  to  society's  ills.  Unfortunately,  the  former  separatist  mentality  lives  on  in  many,  if  not  most,  local  Nazarene  congregations.  The  focus  of  this  project  was  to  present  a  theology  and  methodology  for  transforming  a  congregation  holding  a  narrow,  private  party,  interpretation  of  the  gospel  into  one  which  understands  the  "tolerable  harmony"  between  the  interior  life  and  practical  holiness,  i.e.  acting  justly.
■520    ▼aTheological  foundation.  Using  Micah  6:8  as  a  starting  point  the  theology  of  holiness  was  given  a  framework  for  practical  application.  While  much  has  been  written  about  the  crisis  experience  of  sanctification,  Micah  6:8  provides  a  workable  model  for  living  the  experience  with  integrity  to  the  scriptures  and  God's  acts  throughout  history.  Micah  6:8  breaks  down  holiness  into  three  components:  (1)  The  interior  life--i.e.  walking  humbly  with  God;  (2)  The  community  life--i.e.  loving  mercy;  (3)  The  social  life--i.e.  acting  justly.
■520    ▼aDue  to  the  nature  of  the  project,  special  attention  is  given  to  develop  the  concept  of  acting  justly.
■520    ▼aMethodological  considerations.  A  transitional  model  was  used  to  inform  the  congregation  of  the  call  of  holiness  in  regards  to  social  justice  issues.  That  model  included:  Wednesday  teachings,  Sunday  sermons,  Dream  Team  meetings,  50-Day  Spiritual  Adventure,  and  various  projects  pertaining  to  issues  of  social  justice.
■520    ▼aConclusion.  The  methodological  model  used  is  evaluated  and  suggestions  made  as  to  possible  enhancements.  Also  discussed  is  the  benefit  of  the  project  to  the  congregation  and  the  progress  made  toward  the  goal.  Considerations  of  social  action  vs.  social  welfare  are  highlighted  as  is  the  effect  of  the  project  upon  the  author.
