- 요약 : This is a close textual reading of the Hebrew text of the biblical book of Esther with special attention to descriptions of the human body. Esther's narrative is rich with corporeal descriptions including feasting and fasting, beauty competitions, and body positions. The transitions from one body image to another correspond to the role reversals in the story. The human body is the interactive agent for negotiating conflicting cultural, social and political views regarding gender roles and ethnic identity. An important step towards understanding the ways in which an individual or group seeks to embody modes of power is to recognize the centrality of images of the human body in representing the formation and transformation of culture. In my reading of Esther's text, politics within the royal court play out the social order based on its ability to regulate populations and to discipline individual bodies. However, the imagined stability of this social order is challenged by transgressions of the rules. The central body image of a successful transgressor is that of Esther---the narrative's main character. Esther's body represents transgressions of a prescribed social order because it is impossible to allocate it in a particular politics of identity. The name "Esther" is a signifier which combines many meanings, and as such creates multiple possible definitions that the circumstances and protagonists of discourse give it. She is Hadassah, but also Esther; an orphan, who is also a daughter; a Jewish maiden who is also a Persian, queen; an obedient woman who initiates banquets and assassinations. Her story plays heavily upon the assumption and subversion of gender roles as they function in political, cultural, and religious contexts. Defined from the outset in terms of her corporeal beauty, she uses her body physically in a politically transgressive way to reorder the dominant gender and religious hierarchy. She effects a radical political subversion in which the oppressed, in essence, rewrite the law of their oppressors.
