■520    ▼aThe  present  work  investigates  the  lion  imagery  and  metaphor  of  the  Hebrew  Bible  in  the  light  of  its  ancient  Near  Eastern  context.  Chapter  1  begins  with  recent  discussions  concerning  language  for  God  and  argues  that  the  non-anthropocentric  metaphors  for  God  found  in  Scripture  are  of  import  for  those  debates.  After  briefly  surveying  metaphor  theory,  the  chapter  focuses  on  one  particular  type  of  metaphor,  animal  imagery,  and  one  specific  example  of  such  (the  lion).
■520    ▼aChapter  2  provides  an  overview  of  the  passages  in  the  Hebrew  Bible  that  mention  or  evoke  lion  imagery.  The  chapter  catalogues  this  data  into  a  typology  of  sorts,  the  broadest  level  of  which  is  naturalistic  vs.  metaphorical  uses.  In  the  latter  fall  the  four  primary  referents  for  lion  metaphors  in  the  Hebrew  Bible:  the  self/righteous,  the  enemy/wicked,  the  monarch/mighty  one,  and  the  deity.
■520    ▼aChapter  3  presents  a  survey  of  the  lion  in  the  epigraphic,  archaeological,  and  artifactual  remains  from  ancient  Israel/Palestine  from  the  Late  Bronze  Age  through  the  Persian  Period  (1500--332  BCE).  Several  tendencies  are  noted,  including  the  frequent  association  of  the  lion  with  the  monarch/mighty  one  and  with  deities  (male  and  female);  the  fact  that  lion  artifacts  are  frequently  found  in  cultic  and  official  contexts;  and  that  the  artistic  style  of  these  objects  have  connections  to  other  regions.
■520    ▼aChapter  4  offers  a  treatment  of  the  ancient  Near  Eastern  data  (both  image  and  text)  pertinent  to  lion  imagery.  This  large  body  of  evidence  is  treated  under  four  primary  rubrics:  the  lion  as  enemy,  threat  to  order,  wicked;  the  lion  as  monarch/mighty  one  and  victor;  the  lion  and  the  gods;  and  the  lion  as  guardian  of  gate,  temple,  and  palace.
