■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  an  analysis  of  the  disjunctive  clause  in  the  biblical  Hebrew  portions  of  the  Pentateuch.  A  disjunctive  clause  is  defined  as  have  three  distinct  elements.  The  first  element  is  the  conjunction.  The  second  element  is  a  non-verbal,  nominal  element.  The  third  element  is  the  verb.
■520    ▼aTwo  types  of  clauses  are  important,  conjunctive-sequential  clauses  and  disjunctive  clauses.  These  two  clauses  are  distinguished  in  biblical  Hebrew  by  the  relationship  of  the  conjunction  to  the  verb.  Conjunctive-sequential  clauses  are  those  clauses  where  the  conjunction  is  followed  directly  by  the  verb.  In  this  dissertation  they  are  designated  by  the  pattern  "waw-verb."  Disjunctive  clauses  are  those  clauses  where  the  verb  is  separated  from  the  conjunction  by  some  nominal  element.  In  this  dissertation  they  are  designated  by  the  pattern  "waw-x-verb."
■520    ▼aA  waw-verb  construction  functions  to  indicate  subsequence.  In  English  this  is  equivalent  to  saying,  "This  happened,  then  this  happened,  and  then  this  happened."  Such  clauses  have  a  temporal  and/or  causal  relationship  in  the  contexts  in  which  they  occur.  On  the  other  hand,  a  waw-x-verb  construction  functions  to  indicate  coordination,  linking  together  elements  on  the  same  grammatical  level.
■520    ▼aThe  above  designations  are  consistent  in  the  biblical  Hebrew  text  of  the  Pentateuch  for  both  the  suffix  and  the  prefix  verbal  forms.  They  are  also  consistent  in  every  discourse  type  in  which  they  occur,  whether  narrative  event  sequences,  speech  units,  predictive  portions,  and  law  units.  Finally,  the  same  designations  are  true  for  the  verbal  forms  such  as  infinitives,  participles,  and  imperatives.  In  each  case,  if  the  verbal  form  is  functioning  as  a  verb,  then  they  follow  the  characteristic  functions  of  the  waw-verb  and  the  waw-x-verb  constructions.  In  the  end,  the  waw-verb  construction  indicates  subsequence,  while  the  waw-x-verb  construction  indicates  coordination.
