■520    ▼aThe  Israelite  exodus  from  Egypt  forms  the  foundational  national  origin  narrative  in  the  Hebrew  Bible.  It  is  a  compelling  and  popular  tale,  and  thus  perplexing  that  only  minimal  supportive  circumstantial  evidence  exists  beyond  the  Bible.
■520    ▼aAs  a  story  that  retained  its  centrality  within  Israelite  national  identity  it  may  be  possible  to  rely  upon  the  biblical  text  to  portray  the  geographical  conceptualization  that  the  exodus  narrative  describes.  This  involves  the  analysis  of  the  geographical  locations  to  which  the  biblical  authors  indicate  the  Israelites  journeyed.  These  sources  perceived  the  exodus  as  a  flight  from  Egypt.  They  variously  refer  to  many  of  the  exodus  sites,  both  in  and  out  of  the  context  of  the  exodus  events  and  wanderings.  In  addition,  these  sources  occasionally  mention  these  same  sites  in  proximity  to  known  geographical  locations  (e.g.,  Moab  and  Edom).  This  dissertation  details,  compares  and  contrasts  these  geographical  perspectives  described  by  both  pentateuchal  and  non-pentateuchal  biblical  sources.
■520    ▼aTexts  used  for  the  identification  of  the  exodus  sites  include  the  itinerary  references  found  within  the  books  of  Exodus,  Numbers  and  Deuteronomy.  After  identifying  all  biblical  references  to  these  sites,  three  Source  Tradition  divisions,  those  delineated  by  S.  R.  Driver,  M.  Noth  and  R.  Friedman  are  utilized  to  categorize,  by  source,  the  physical  locations  of  the  exodus  sites.  A  thorough  review  of  ancient  Greek  and  Latin  geographies/histories  is  undertaken  to  indicate  the  regional  geographical  perspective  of  the  sources.
■520    ▼aThe  exodus  sites  are  also  mentioned  within  non-pentateuchal  sources.  All  pertinent  occurrences  within  the  Hebrew  Bible  are  detailed.  Consideration  is  given  to  the  level  of  consistency  within  the  sources  in  presenting  the  physical  location  of  these  particular  sites.
■520    ▼aThe  data  gathered  indicates  that  the  geographical  sites  identified  by  the  exodus  itineraries  were  located  in  or  near  Edom,  the  Negeb,  Moab  and  the  Bashan.  More  specifically,  these  sites  were  not  located  in  proximity  to  the  Nile  Delta  region  of  Egypt.  It  is  suggested  that  the  general  presupposition  of  an  Israelite  exodus  from  Egypt  is  thus  incorrect.  This  national  origin  story  describes  events  originating  in  the  southern  region  of  ancient  Israel,  between  the  Negeb  and  the  Gulf  of  Aqaba.
