요약 : This dissertation consists of a rhetorical examination of four divine council scenes from the Second Temple period: Zechariah 3, Job 1--2, Daniel 7, and I Enoch 90. The divine council scene consists of an episode that takes place before the heavenly throne in which judgment is made and announced. The scene reflects a motif that the writers could nuance in a variety of ways in order to express their understanding of God and divine judgment. The writers could pick and chose various thematic elements derived from the divine council motif in order to express their specific understanding of the council. What did the scene help the writers to say concerning Yahweh and the judgment that took place before the heavenly throne? By studying the way the writer of each individual text inflected a pattern of cultural expectation into something unique, the purposes of the individual writer as well as the unique message of each text can be illumined.
초록/해제
요약 : The first chapter of this work reviews various interpretations of the divine council texts from some of the earliest interpretations found in the Targumim and New Testament through the 19th century. This is followed by a discussion of how interpretation of these texts changed after the discovery of the related ancient Near Eastern material. Part One addresses the rhetorical function of the divine council in two Second Temple texts from the Persian Period: Zechariah 3 and Job 1--2. They both illustrate individual uses of the divine council while still maintaining many points of contact. Part Two addresses the rhetorical function of the divine council in two apocalyptic texts from the Hellenistic period: Daniel 7 and I Enoch 90. These two texts illustrate a marked difference of use as the divine council is adapted into apocalyptic literature. Each chapter contains a basic exegesis of the text under consideration leading to a rhetorical examination of how the text creates meaning within its context. Finally, comparisons between the various divine council texts are made as a way to determine the uniqueness of each inflection of the divine council scene within the Hebrew Bible.
