초록/해제: 요약 : The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the critical realist epistemology of Paul G. Hiebert and its effect on his theological and missiological thinking. It presents the development of critical realism in philosophy and its use in theology. A specific emphasis is placed on critical realism's impact on ecclesiological issues. A critical analysis and comparison of Hiebert's critical realist ecclesiology is presented in opposition to biblical evidence and traditional evangelical and Baptist positions.

Theologians and philosophers rejected the influence of postmodern thinking and sought a new direction in epistemology. There are two primary streams of development that influenced Hiebert, one in philosophy and one in the debate between theology and science. Secular and religious philosophers and philosophers of science believe critical realism to be a mediating position between the positivism and idealism of modernity and the relativism of postmodernism.

A survey of the development of quantum mechanics and its influence on metaphysics is presented. The antirealist issues found in quantum mechanics is discussed and a Christian response is proposed. Additionally, Hiebert's views on the boundaries of ecclesiology are discussed and compared to the biblical evidence and traditional evangelical and Southern Baptist positions.

Critical realists accept an ontologically objective real world but reject epistemic certitude based upon observations in quantum physics. Christians must reject ontological and epistemological positions that oppose the biblical, Christian worldview, grounded on a God-centered understanding of the universe and man's creation in His image. Additionally, evangelicals and Baptists in particular, must reject missiological positions centered on pragmatic need rather than biblical truth.
