■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  explores  the  nature,  purpose,  and  impact  of  '  sb  "pain,  difficulty,"  on  humanity  with  special  reference  to  Genesis  3.  Chapter  One  is  an  introductory  chapter  that  briefly  delineates  the  rationale  for  and  the  methodology  of  the  dissertation.  The  dissertation  includes  analysis  as  well  as  synthesis,  bringing  together  conclusions  that  answer  four  questions:  What  is  'sb?  What  is  the  purpose  of  'sb?  What  is  the  impact  of  'sb  on  humanity?  How  is  humanity  to  live  in  the  midst  of  'sb?
■520    ▼aChapter  Two  provides  a  linguistic  and  semantic  analysis,  ultimately  determining  that  'sb  is  to  be  translated  within  the  semantic  field  of  "difficulty."  It  is  predominantly  a  state  of  being.
■520    ▼aChapter  Three  contains  a  contextual  and  exegetical  analysis  of  Genesis  3  and  5.  The  study  concludes  that  'sb  is  life's  "relentless  difficulty"  from  which  human  beings  long  for  rest  or  relief.
■520    ▼aChapter  Four  provides  a  contextual  and  exegetical  analysis  of  the  remaining  Genesis  passages,  further  substantiating  the  thesis  that  'sb  conveys  struggle  and  difficulty.
