■520    ▼aBiblical  Hebrew  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im,  despite  its  frequent  use  as  a  common  noun  meaning  "deity"  and  its  prominence  as  a  designation  for  Israel's  god,  has  received  surprisingly  little  direct  treatment  in  modern  biblical  scholarship,  resulting  in  a  general  vagueness  in  the  understanding  of  the  expression.  The  problem  applies,  on  the  one  hand,  to  the  grammatically  plural  form,  meaning,  and  religious-historical  background  of  the  appellative  and,  on  the  other,  to  the  role  of  the  title  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im  in  the  history  of  Israelite  religion.  This  study  offers  a  comprehensive  reappraisal  of  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im  including  a  philological  and  historical  examination  of  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im's  extra-biblical  counterparts,  a  lexical  analysis  of  its  use  as  a  common  noun,  and  a  historical-critical  analysis  of  biblical  texts  relevant  to  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im's  significance  in  Israelite  religion.  The  results  of  the  study  indicate  that  the  generic  meaning  of  the  singular  common  noun  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im,  a  concretized  abstract  plural,  made  it  suitable  in  various  contexts  as  a  substitution  for  a  specific  divine  name.  The  title    '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im  became  prominent  as  the  divine  designation  used  in  a  cult  formula  that  was  featured  both  in  the  central  worship  of  premonarchic  Israel  and  in  the  national  cult  of  the  northern  kingdom  of  Israel.  The  use  of  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im  by  northern  prophetic  Yahwists  and  in  Pentateuchal  E  emphasized  a  concern  both  for  a  clarification  of  the  identity  of  the  national  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im  (i.e.,  the  national  patron  deity)  and  for  Israel's  exclusive  loyalty  to  Yawheh.  In  sum,  '    e&d11;lo&d1;  h  im  was  a  prominent  title  in  Israel's  national  religion  both  during  and  prior  to  the  monarchy  and  played  a  significant  role  in  the  development  of  the  exclusive  worship  of  Yahweh.
