요약 : The present study proposes that the Song of Songs contains an inclusio and an implicit paradigm of nuptial images representing the ANE bridal chamber which functions as an interpretive framework for understanding the nature of the Song's erotic love. This proposal is based upon the formulation and application of an integrative literary methodology which incorporates essential elements from both traditional literary approaches in conjunction with more recent understandings of conceptual metaphor. The resultant methodology is able to account for the uniqueness of the Song's poetry which is highly metaphorical in character. At the same time, this study overcomes the shortcomings of earlier literary studies which attempted to delineate a clearly defined structure for the Song and which viewed structure as the key to the Song's unity and interpretation. By contrast, the paradigm of bridal chamber images in the present study forms the basis for understanding the Song as a whole and for interpreting its various imageries and motifs.

요약 : The present thesis makes the following contributions to the Song's interpretative history. First, it acts as a corrective to recent interpretations of the Song which view the couple's love relationship as existing outside the confines of marriage, a view which is antipathetic to the worldview of ancient Israel and to marriage as an important ANE socioeconomic institution. Second, it avoids the necessity of appealing to the canonical context alone as adequate justification for sanctifying the erotic love in the Song as spousal love, especially since other scholars, particularly feminists, have argued that the female protagonist represents the only unmediated voice in the Bible. Third, the present thesis serves as an effective critique of recent studies which are antipathetic to the idea that the Song's love lyrics refer to a spousal relationship. Such studies are normally characterized by an improper application of comparative methodology based upon an overreaction to earlier excesses within the Song's interpretive history. The current tendency has been to impose an Egyptian worldview upon the Song which arose during the enlightenment period that produced much of Egypt's erotic love poetry.
