요약 : The book of Ecclesiastes is one of the more difficult biblical books to understand. Permeated with contradictions, non-traditional wisdom, and words which border on the unorthodox, ancient and modern interpreters alike struggle with its meaning. Ancient interpreters paraphrase the wise man Qohelet to the extent he is made to say the very opposite of the original. Modern interpreters postulate glosses where they believe the words too orthodox, saying the more traditional words of wisdom and faith were attempts to smooth over the original skeptical Qohelet. More recently a number of interpreters attempt to make Qohelet into an optimist whose real message is to enjoy life, for that is truly God's gift.

요약 : However, we contend that Qohelet is a wise man who believes in God, but because of his observations, he senses God is distant, the world does not match the traditional teachings of wisdom, and life is ultimately meaningless.

요약 : This study investigates the epilogue, in an attempt to see how this passage, the book's own commentary, looks at the words of Qohelet and leads us to the meaning of the book. We conclude Qohelet has no confidence in God's justice and sees nothing beyond the grave where anything could be made right. To Qohelet God is to be dreaded, for he alone allows some to enjoy life while withholding joy from others. Qohelet is a wise man at odds with the traditional wisdom of ancient Israel, and the epilogue establishes this interpretation.

요약 : The first chapter covers the debate over Ecclesiastes as it pertains to several matters of biblical introduction, including date, language and canonization. The second chapter is the heart of the present work as it is a detailed exegesis of the epilogue with a survey of recent interpreters. The third chapter researches the "joy refrains" and "fear of God" passages as we compare our interpretation against those who would see in Qohelet a "preacher of joy." The fourth chapter accents crucial points in the interpretation and brings conclusions on the meaning of Ecclesiastes.
