요약 : Persian Yehudite society was fraught with issues related to reconceptualizing individual and social identities. The exile of the elite from Judah, the desecration of the temple, and the loss of both God's land-gift and their political autonomy were only exacerbated by the re-entry of some of the exiles into Yehud after Cyrus's decree. Yet the history of scholarship reveals relatively few social-scientific treatments of intermarriage in Ezra 9--10. I explore the relationship that existed between marriage and economics, and between marriage and ethnicity, to understand the intermarriage dilemma in Ezra 9--10.
초록/해제
요약 : I hypothesize that the intermarriage conflict in Ezra 9--10 reflects the struggles of a fledgling community seeking to redefine its communal identity while simultaneously facing pragmatic economic issues which resulted from political reality. To investigate this hypothesis, I employ an anthropological reading and an ideological analysis of the text. The anthropological reading is based on a series of queries designed to expose matters related to the sociocultural power dynamics evident in Yehudite society. The ideological analysis is guided by the structure of the narrative itself and the line of logic identified in the text according to the social locations of the text's readers.

요약 : In addition, I examine works by biblical scholars on lifeways in Persian Yehud; writings pertinent to Achaemenid culture and history in general; archaeological evidence pertaining to the economic system; and social-scientific studies on marriage and ethnicity as well as psychosocial studies on the effects of exile.
초록/해제
요약 : I conclude that Ezra 9--10 expresses not merely or even primarily moral or ethical outrage, the most obvious subject of the text, but economic concerns that are imbedded in political circumstances, namely, the plight of a landless people who lack economic viability. Intermarriage between Yehudite men and foreign women provided some Yehudite men with regained access to land in Yehud in exchange for their service to Persian royalty. These marriages were economically compelling and politically motivated despite their threat to the communal social identity. This, I contend, is at the root of the edict against intermarriage.
