■520    ▼aDivine  abandonment  is  a  concept  comprised  of  several  features,  which  may  be  supplied  by  a  combination  of  items  such  as  key  terms,  modifiers,  discourse  functions,  etc.  Chapter  one  explores  points  of  comparison  between  lexical  semantics  and  theological  topics,  noting  several  problems  involved  in  a  lexical  approach  to  theology.  Chapter  two  studies  the  contexts  where  God  is  the  agent  of  the  key  terms  for  abandoning  forsaking,  and  hiding  the  face.  These  contexts  establish  the  semantic  features  of  divine  abandonment,  which  are  the  following  sequence:  (1)  an  assumed  relationship,  (2)  rejection  by  God,  (3)  God's  self-referential  breaking  the  relationship,  and  (4)  the  subsequent  absence  of  God  or  lack  of  involvement.
■520    ▼aChapter  three  examines  divine  rejection,  categorizing  the  contexts  according  to  the  rejected  party,  the  result,  the  type  of  statement  and  the  speaker.  In  conjunction  with  the  type  of  rejection  term,  the  results  differentiate  between  the  individual  and  community.
■520    ▼aChapters  four  and  five  address  the  results  of  abandonment.  Four  sets  of  terms  portray  God's  lack  of  consideration  for  people:  memory  terms,  thought  terms,  sight  terms  and  hearing  terms.  Authoritative  statements  that  God  does  not  heed  or  consider  are  reserved  for  the  community.  Against  the  backdrop  of  God's  presence,  chapter  five  discussed  God's  absence  and/or  distance  as  logical  results  of  abandonment.
■520    ▼aChapter  six  examines  terms  that  indicate  God  breaking  the  relationship  through  a  self-referential  action.  The  most  revealing  analysis  comes  from  observing  the  types  of  statements  made  about  abandonment  and  combining  these  data  with  notations  of  who  is  abandoned  and  in  what  way.  Except  for  being  rejected  from  a  leadership  role,  there  are  no  declarative  statements  of  divine  abandonment  of  the  individual  coming  from  authoritative  speakers.  These  are  reserved  to  the  community  and  entail  military  threats.  When  an  individual  voices  questions  or  petitions,  which  use  implementation  terms  (feature  3),  that  individual  is  the  king  or  stands  for  the  community  in  most,  if  not  all  cases.
■520    ▼aChapter  7  sketches  the  issues  of  comparing  the  Biblical  material  to  Mesopotamian  material  and  profiles  the  theme  in  Mesopotamian  material  in  several  genres.  A  Mesopotamian  typology  developed  by  Block  for  national  abandonment  is  compared  to  select  Biblical  passages.
