요약 : In the past twenty-five years, scholarship on the Day of Yahweh has slowed to a relative standstill. In order to reverse this trend, a fresh approach is needed that is engaging, worthwhile, and critically central to the Day of Yahweh. We found this approach in the writings of Kenneth Burke who enables us to ask, what is Yahweh's motive on the Day of Yahweh and how does it develop as reflected in the rhetorical strategies used by the biblical prophets?
초록/해제
요약 : Understanding the Day of Yahweh lies in its development, not in its origin. The prophets, responding to various historical situations, continually developed the Day of Yahweh. Central to this development were prophetic responses to the fall of Jerusalem and how Yahweh's motive on the Day of Yahweh changed in accordance with Israel's changed historical situation. Pre-fall prophecies on the Day of Yahweh are radically different from post-fall prophecies.

요약 : The "origin studies" failed to see this development because they focused on the prophecies as generic expressions of an inherited form, rather than as individual expressions of unique forms. The prophets used the traditional languages of war, theophany, enthronement, and covenant as part of their rhetorical strategies and not because the Day of Yahweh originated in one of these traditions. Kenneth Burke's rhetorical tools (pentadic analysis, supported by cluster analysis, agon analysis, and identification) are well suited to uncovering the particular use of language in the Biblical passages about the Day of Yahweh. In addition, this study uniquely hones these tools for application, specifically, to the Day of Yahweh prophecies, but also, generally, to biblical literature as a whole.

요약 : Our analyses demonstrate that the social location of prophecy shifted from a stable social location in pre-exilic times to an unstable one during post-exilic times. This shift in social location is reflected in a shift in the understanding of Yahweh's motive on the Day of Yahweh and a shift in rhetorical strategies used to talk about it. We also demonstrate that the Day of Yahweh did not become fully eschatological until post-exilic times.
