요약 : Tents abound both in quantity and importance in the Hebrew Bible, exceeding all other structures in importance. They provide the dominant habitation throughout the Torah. Even Yahweh inhabits a tent from Sinai until the construction of Solomon's Temple; accordingly, a tent was ancient Israel's cultic center during its formative period. Tents are intimately connected to the judgeships of Deborah and Samuel, as well as the monarchy under David and his successors. Later Israelite and Judahite prophets romanticize and idealize their tensile heritage, even praising nomadic contemporaries who forgo urban trappings in favor of the perceived superior lodging provided by tent. Tents in the Hebrew Bible serve as metaphors for God, the universe, Israel, and Judah. Moreover, the use of tents transcends the domestic and religious spheres. Tents are closely associated with the military, where they are often used by ancient Israel and her enemies on campaigns and sieges. They are also employed in weddings, apparently both in the ceremony and as a consummation chamber.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation aims to examine the function, form, and symbolism of ancient tents, specifically in the Hebrew Bible, but also in the greater context of the ancient Near East. It will begin by examining the many terms associated with tents. It will be shown that Hebrew terms for domiciles blend in usage. Next, using historical, mythological, archaeological, and anthropological insights, tents will be examined in the manifold usage: domiciliary, military, nuptial, and religious. Various parallels and models of the Tabernacle will be assessed, and the Tabernacle's historicity will be affirmed. Finally, the dissertation ends by analyzing the enigmatic phrase "To your tents, O Israel!" It will be shown that dismissing councils to tents is part of a widespread formula in the ancient Near East, retaining vestiges of a tent-dwelling past.
