요약 : The New Testament concept of Satan drastically differs from that of the Old Testament. Appearing as accuser, adversary, and angel-minister, Satan fulfills God's purpose in the Old Testament. The New Testament, however, presents Satan as the archenemy of God and humanity. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the when, why, and how of this development.

요약 : In order to achieve this aim, chapter 1 and chapter 2 respectively investigate the references to Satan in the Old Testament (Num. 22:22, 32; Job 1--2; Zech. 3:1--2; 1 Chron. 21:1) and the Jewish writings of the intertestamental period. In fact, the texts of the Old Testament and the Jewish intertestamental literature serve as the primary sources for the dissertation. The discussion of chapters 1 and 2 shows that in the intertestamental literature the portrait of Satan begins to deviate from its Old Testament predecessor.

요약 : Chapter 3 addresses the cause of this change in light of the Sitz-im-Leben of the intertestamental period. The Babylonian exile and the Persian supremacy of the Ancient Near East affect many aspects of Jewish life, including the Jewish worldview. These new thoughts and views are further constructed and formulated in line with the political, cultural, and social upheavals of the following era. The harshness of life in Palestine under Hellenistic and, then, Roman rule inevitably leads the Jews to have a pessimistic attitude toward this world, which necessitates an eschatological expectation for the world to come. All these elements help develop a new conception of Satan in the minds of the Jews.
초록/해제
요약 : The result of the investigation makes clear that historical development produced the New Testament concept of Satan. The Old Testament does not know Satan as the evil, demonic archenemy of God and humanity. Throughout the Old Testament, Satan remains God's agent, fulfilling God's purpose. Not until the intertestamental period, 200 B.C. to A.D. 100, does Satan emerge as the evil, demonic being found in Jewish literature. This intertestamental Jewish satanology influences the writers of the New Testament to portray Satan as demonic, doomed to destruction in the final judgment.
