요약 : Contemporary scholars generally translate the Hebrew stem znh as "prostitute" or "cultic prostitute" and understand it as a metaphor for Israel's alleged apostasy. However prostitution in the Biblical texts is neither punished nor censured making this a weak metaphor for prophetic discourse about apostasy. Alleged, cultic sexual rituals in Ugarit and Mesopotamia have affected scholarly interpretations of Bibilcal texts; however, primary documents from these areas do not support this assumption. In light of this, the meaning of znh needs reassessment.

요약 : In this research, I investigate the meaning of znh, free of sexual assumptions. Based on its textual environment, I propose that znh designates a category of illicit religious practices-illicit to the writers of the Biblical discourse---devoted to deities other than Yahweh. Sacrifices to deities other than Yahweh are the prototype practice. The entire sacrificial process is illicit including the consumption of sacrificial meat and bowing to non-Yahwist deities, all of which signify the repudiation Yahweh's sovereignty.

요약 : The negative perception of znh is a Hebrew phenomena which developed by blending znh with adultery and with the negative, cosmic consequences of these rituals. Blended with adultery, znh rituals come to be perceived as a criminal offense (Hosea and Jeremiah). Hosea associates znh with prostitution. Jeremiah extends the znh category to include the site of these rituals and their installations. Znh is linked to religious "(mis)deeds" (Hosea) and blended with "detestable things" (Jeremiah). Hosea's wife as well as znh in the Holiness Code refer to women who participate in these "illicit" religious rites. Hosea preaches against the women who appear to be leaders in these alternate practices. Znh activities produce ritual pollution (Hosea and Jeremiah) and land pollution (Jeremiah) and result in a profane condition, the antithesis of holiness, and therefore, the concern of the priests since it threatens the Israelite cosmos and, thus, Israelite well-being and existence.

요약 : Outside of canonical texts, the stem zny, meaning "prostitute," first appears in Aramaic in the Palmyrene Tariff, 137 C.E. The Arabic zny signifies adultery and prostitution while the Arabic zwn, like the Hebrew znh, refers to idolatry and the site of idol worship.
